Chapter Nine

A low hiss filled the sudden stillness of the chamber. Ranger cursed, fighting harder to free himself from the chains pinning him to the wall. Metal bit into skin, but still the chains held him.

Laughter, low and intense, evil and full of malice, filled the space, making his hackles rise. Danger. His instincts roared a challenge to the new threat to his mate.

Just thinking of Star brought a low whine to his throat. Star—the mate he couldn’t reach, couldn’t save, couldn’t comfort, couldn’t protect. His wolf threatened to break free from his bonds and take over. He fought the instinct, needing to think and not rage in fury.

“Such strength. Do you not like your collar, dog?” The voice from their first battle filled the space of the cell, seeming to echo off the walls as it shivered down his skin.

Revulsion rose up so high that he nearly gagged from it. His instincts warned him the voice was dangerous. Whatever power it had didn’t affect him, but he sensed her voice could harm his mate. His fury grew.

“And you bring us our absent daughter, do you? Your scent marks her as your bitch, eh? Staining her even more with the stench of your house of dogs.”

Growling in rage now, he fought the chains. The need to reach Star was almost painful, it was so demanding. This disgusting Vampire, dared to call his beautiful mate such things? Fury beat at him like a drum, covering his eyes with a haze of red.

“What makes you think you could possibly come here, to our home, and escape? No one ever escapes, unless we let them. Our power is immense, our reach far and our strength? Unbreakable.”

The sneer to those words brought out all his hatred, all his rage against Vampires to a low, simmering boil. It threatened to spill over. This hatred he held onto, this madness had kept him from Star. Now he centered it where it should have been aimed long ago.

“Ah, I see you still struggle with your animal. Such barbaric instincts direct your thoughts. Your very nature is ruled by the beast. Pity, but you have your uses.” The voice was still invisible, no doubt in the cell with them, hidden from his sight, but not his senses. An ancient, female Vampire’s sickening-sweet scent filled the air, making his hackles rise.

“Go to hell. Reveal yourself, witch.”

Laughter met his words. The male Vampires lining the walls grinned, revealing their fangs mockingly. They thought him subdued, bound and at their mercy. Fools. Vampires thought themselves so much smarter than the Lykae, but the wolf clan was cunning, and he was going to be ripping all their throats out for what they’d done to his mate.

“Such stubbornness. Shall we beat him, mistress?” One of the larger males moved toward him, a long, thin whip in hand, his pale face eager, eyes glowing almost red in the low light.

Gladly he would let the male beat him. It didn’t matter to him what pain they inflicted on his body.
